Montmartre
If you’re looking for an escape from the hustle and bustle of Paris, this is definitely where you want to go. This district is also known as “the hill” because it is situated on top of Mount Montmartre at an elevation of 130 meters (430 feet) and offers beautiful views of Paris. It attracts tourists from all over the world who want to witness one of Europe’s most famous landmarks – Sacré Coeur Basilica (Sacred Heart Basilica) which dominates this area like no other building in France. Not only is it one of the most iconic landmarks in the City of Lights, but it’s also a great place to get a feel for authentic Parisian culture. From exploring its winding cobblestone streets and local boutiques, to it’s vibrant music acts – there’s always something going on in Montmartre.
Montmartre is a great area for exploring if you like art, culture and history. This neighbourhood is the perfect blend of old and new. There are also many scenic walking paths where you can enjoy views like no other. Take a stroll from Van Gogh’s apartment through to the beautiful Place du Tertre. There are plenty of artists around so if you are looking for something unique then this is the place to come. The area is also home to a number of restaurants and cafes where you can grab a bite to eat or enjoy a drink while taking in the sights.
One of the best things about Montmartre is that all key spots and hidden gems are conveniently located close together. And with so many places located within a 5-10 minutes’ walk of each other, you can easily see and do everything in one day. Here are a few spots and gems in Montmartre that are worth visiting.
Wall of Love
The Wall of Love is a beautiful and iconic photo opportunity that you shouldn’t miss. This is the most romantic wall in Europe. The phrase “ I love you” is displayed on 612 tiles featured 311 times in 250 languages.
Walk pass Van Gogh Apartment
Van Gogh’s apartment is on Rue Lepic in Montmartre. He lived there with his brother for about 2 years from 1886 to 1888 before he left for South of France.
Fotoautomat
Fitting into the artistic and vintage vibe of the district, check out this classic photobooth. Fotoautomat is an Instagram worthy attraction that will take your picture with some cool filters and then print it out in front of you.
La Maison Rose
La Maison Rose is a notable restaurant with a fascinating history. It was founded by the creative couple Romon Pichot a painter and his model wife Germaine Gargallo in 1908. The house was painted pink at the request of Germaine which they turned into a restaurant the same year, and it has since become a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike. The restaurant was featured in the hit show “Emily in Paris” and is renowned for its charming atmosphere and delicious French cuisine. La Maison Rose is a true Parisian gem, a testament to the power of love, and a place that will forever be cherished by people from all walks of life.
Tip: This place gets booked fast! Make a reservation a few months in advance.
La Consulat
This is my prime breakfast and lunch spot in Montmartre. My favourite breakfast is their rum pancakes. Yes, that means pancakes soaked in rum and flambé live! It’s a unique experience and the fusion of flavours work perfectly! If you’re daring enough you can also order snails here which taste amazing.
Square Marcel Bleustein Blanchet
This is a top secret gem! It’s a hidden garden behind the Sacré Coeur Basilica which features a beautiful arch covered in greenery!
Pigalle
Pigalle in particular is known for its bohemian charm, diversity of cultures and attractions – from the iconic Moulin Rouge to smaller family run bars and shops. If you’re planning a trip to Montmartre make sure you explore Pigalle too since it’s a 10 minutes’ walk away.
Pink Mamma
This is my favourite restaurant in Pigalle. Pink Mamma serves traditional Italian food that has been exquisitely crafted by expert chefs. The restaurant has a rustic feel with the coolest cocktail bar! It’s a 4 minutes’ walk from Moulin Rouge and 15 minutes away from Sacré-Cœur.
Pigalle Duperré basketball court
Next door to Pink Mamma is one of the world’s most colourful basketball courts! Pigalle Duperré is a great destination for any basketball fans. The court is open to the public to play so don’t forget to bring a ball and friends to shoot a few hoops with. Plus it’s a fantastic way to burn the calories off after a meal at Pink Mamma.
Rue Crémieux
This picturesque neighbourhood provides a unique atmosphere with its vibrant pastel-coloured houses built in the 19th century. There are many restaurants, cafes and bars to enjoy while discovering this colourful street, providing plenty of options for everyone!
Rue Crémieux is not the only rainbow coloured street in the 12th arrondissement, close by is Cour d’Alsace-Lorraine. Properties on this street are decorated with colourful tiles which can be found on almost all of the buildings here. It is a great place for taking photographs as there are countless options for backgrounds.
Colonnes de Buren/Les Deux Plateaux and Panthéon
Colonnes de Buren/Les Deux Plateaux is another amazing work of art in Paris’ urban centre. It’s located in the Jardin du Palais Royal, which can be reached by walking through the Louvre.
The Panthéon is an impressive piece of history and is one spot you won’t want to miss. To really experience the power of this building, take a tour and learn about the people who shaped France. If you’re planning a trip between November and March the First Sunday of the month is free admission at the Pantheon. Take time out to explore the nooks and crannies inside the temple of the French nation.
