Cappadocia is a surreal landscape that seems plucked straight from the pages of a fairy tale. Known for its cosmic rock formations, ancient cave dwellings and spectacular hot air balloon festivals, this beautiful region has travellers embarking on a journey that’s like no other. As you navigate the epic valleys and complex of underground cities, you will discover a land history, culture and natural beauty that are intertwined to both compliment and expand on each other.
In this travel blog, I’ll take you through the hidden gems and must-see attractions of Cappadocia, sharing insider tips, personal experiences, and captivating stories that will inspire your own adventure. This is your ticket to discovering the magical sunrise views to the artistic charm of local pottery and ceramics.
I avoided most Instagrammable activities because I feel they are overdone, unrealistic, and don’t show the real essence of Turkey. I find it odd to go into a carpet store and have a drone fly over me, especially considering I already have a drone of my own. I also don’t find it enjoyable to ride an ATV while the dust is blowing in my face. Plus, photo shoots with flying dresses or horses running in the background are just ridiculous and overdone because they don’t add to a relaxing trip where I can enjoy and discover everything Cappadocia has to offer. So, if you are looking for any of those experiences, I am afraid this is not the blog post for you. If anything, I would include these items on my “do not list” as some of the experiences can be pricey, and during the summer the temperatures are unbearable to carry out these excursions. Unless you want wake at sunrise for cooler temperatures and let’s face it, no one wants to be waking up at 5 am whilst on holiday for an excursion that will only last an hour.
Sword Valley and Red Valley
Start your exploration in Sword Valley, where dramatic rock formations rise like sentinels against the sky. This is a valley characterised by much beauty, full of some of the best hiking trails to beckon adventurers to meander through rugged terrain and offer panoramic vistas that capture the soul. You will witness bright flora and intriguing formations that fire your imagination while you make your trek through this valley.
Not far from here lies the Red Valley, which is renowned for its breathtaking colours during sunset. The reddish tints of the valley’s rocks make up a breathtaking view in the last part of the day when the sun hides beyond the horizon and colours everything with warm shades. This is the perfect spot for photography lovers and romantic dates, providing a picturesque backdrop for unforgettable moments.
Göreme
Nestled in the heart of Cappadocia, Göreme is a vibrant town and the central hub for entering the extraordinary region. Here you can walk around the charming streets, filled with local shops, carpet and rug stores, pottery and ceramics shops, cafes, and traditional Turkish restaurants. It’s also home to the Göreme Open Air Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage site with ancient rock-cut churches full of unbelievable frescoes. This historical treasure speaks to the artistry and spirituality of its time, offering visitors a glimpse into Cappadocia’s rich heritage. Opposite from the Göreme Open Air Museum is The Blue Church. It’s an interesting token of Byzantine architecture which is free to visit.
Afacanlar Seramik
While in Göreme, stop by Afacanlar Seramik, a charming ceramic and pottery shop. Here, a skilled craftsman named Süleyman showcases his talent and artistry through beautiful pieces that reflect the Turkey’s rich artistic traditions. From intricately designed plates to unique pottery and ceramic shapes, each item tells a story of its own.
As you step into this local shop, be prepared to be blown away. What started as a simple trip for ceramics turned into a journey of self-discovery. During my visit, I found a hidden gem… a pottery wheel! Little did I know, that I had a raw talent waiting to be revealed. With every spin of the wheel, I felt the magic of Cappadocia come alive in my fingertips. Clay transformed into art, and I couldn’t believe the masterpiece I created! If you’re visiting Cappadocia, make sure to put this pottery experience at the top of your itinerary. It’s an opportunity to unleash your creativity and immerse yourself in the rich culture of this beautiful destination.
The Castle Cave Hotel Rooftop Bar and Restaurant
The Castle Cave Hotel Rooftop Bar and Restaurant is the perfect way to relax after a day’s excursion. The view from the top of the venue is incredible, with rock formations thrown up from every corner. Here, you can dine on of Turkish and Western cuisine while you take in stunning views over Göreme. The magical ambiance at sunset and the view are beyond imagination, which makes this venue a golden gem in Göreme.
Love Valley
No trip to Cappadocia would at all be counted as complete without a visit to Love Valley. This valley is not only a testament to nature’s artistry but also a romantic scenario for couples. Take a walk down the valley amidst lush greenery and awesome rock formations and enjoy the pretty sceneries around.
